Ward 1 councillor Stephen Turner is in hot water over a series of provocative YouTube videos.
He was not on council when the videos were made, but they were uploaded to YouTube in September and early October.
In one of the videos, he calls an Indigenous woman an “old woman,” accuses people of “stealing from the seniors,” describes people as “very racist,” says the dead should have guns and says people should have a “right to die.”
One of the videos was posted in September and has been deleted since.
The second one includes Mr. Turner making a number of provocative statements.
He also posted a recorded phone call to a woman.
“Hi, this is Stephen Turner,” he says. “I’ve been accused of a lot of things that I’m not going to get into.”
Later in the recording, he repeats some of his earlier comments and says his critics have provoked him.
“I’m an elderly man,” he says. “I shouldn’t be out here trying to yell on a phone with you… If it weren’t for [expletive] like you, I wouldn’t be out here talking.”
Mr. Turner was interviewed about the videos this week during a town hall meeting in Oshawa.
He said he was unaware of how long the videos had been posted on YouTube and that he doesn’t have a Twitter account. He also said he wasn’t on council at the time they were posted and that he didn’t agree with their content.
Another councillor, Christine Boyle, has issued a statement about the videos, saying that a member of council is “invalidating First Nations culture” and that they are “heinous.”
She said the councillor “is displaying a most disturbing lack of respect for women, men, boys, girls, elders, and has difficulty understanding the role of a Coun. to respect people’s culture, history, freedom of religion and freedom of speech.”
Mr. Turner voted against changing the human rights code to include the right to be free of hate. Councillor Charles Sousa had proposed an amendment calling for the city to use human rights standards in all area agreements and acting against hate.
Mr. Turner is a former city councillor for the Town of Forest Hill, a long-time Oshawa resident. He has no council experience since being elected in January.
His predecessor was former Ward 4 Coun. Andrew Telegdi, who had
