Following a meeting with members of the House of Commons Budget Committee today, the DUP’s Brexit Minister Jeffrey Donaldson said his party was hopeful of getting its own Brexit proposals debated in the House of Commons at the Budget Bill stage next week.
Mr Donaldson said the DUP had been told by the committee that there would be some cross-party agreement on the “fairest possible deal” to give Northern Ireland an “assured supply” of food.
On Monday, the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, told the Commons that the UK Government was committed to ensuring an “assured supply” of food and agricultural goods to Northern Ireland.
But he added that in future any new arrangements for Northern Ireland would need to have a specific date for the end of the transition period and a Commons vote.
Pressed on the DUP position during question time, Mr Donaldson said the DUP was not interested in taking a “simple” “jobs-for-all” approach and that the DUP was prepared to work with all sections of the community to ensure the necessary changes for the future.
“We accept Mr Hammond’s commitment to ensure a “fairer” deal for Northern Ireland. As his statement says, that will be to ensure Northern Ireland has access to our own industry while still remaining in the EU Single Market,” he said.
“We have said many times before that the greater the disruption, the more we need to see the EU give us a good Brexit deal, and we’ve been pushing for an ambitious agreement that can satisfy our political sensitivities and food security.”
Mr Donaldson told the House of Commons that the European Commission was willing to look at the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement “more broadly and to explore some technical options” on future arrangements for Northern Ireland.
