I could do something like this:

Locking in general is a bad idea, there is no such thing as “concurrent access” when you are executing Python code: if you do not have some kind of explicit synchronization, you are working in a serial fashion, not concurrent.
You are generally supposed to synchronize serial operations, and only then, re-assign the result to a local variable.
When you need more complex synchronization, you use locking and/or synchronization primitives.
